3 Tips to Improve Your Chances of an Innovative Idea

Updated: May 6

The world is constantly changing and the pace of innovation is increasing and you may think that coming up with something original or groundbreaking is impossible. It’s definitely harder, but it’s not impossible.Innovation is the key to unlocking new possibilities, but how do you increase your chances of sparking that next big idea. At Medici Next, we would say to embrace the Medici Effect, so here are some tips to do just that:

Surround yourself with people who think differently than you.

Engage with individuals who challenge your perspective. If you’ve ever heard the adage “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room”, well we at Medici have another saying, “If everyone you surround yourself with agrees with everything you say, you’re around the wrong people”. By seeking out those who offer different viewpoints and challenge your assumptions, you challenge your brain. This mental exercise not only sharpens your critical thinking skills but also enhances your ability to adapt and innovate. This diversity of thought, of perspective is the catalyst for creativity, pushing you to think beyond conventional boundaries and discover new pathways to success. So, surround yourself with people who think differently than you and who see the world differently than you. This could be politically, religiously, philosophically, or even as simple as talking to someone in a different field as you. For example if you’re in marketing, talk to a chemist.

Surround yourself with ideas that are different from yours.

Step outside your intellectual comfort zone by engaging with ideas that contradict or challenge your own. It’s easy to stay within the confines of familiar thought patterns, but innovation thrives on contrast and friction. Read articles or books from authors with opposing viewpoints, even those you find abhorrent, listen to debates on topics you think you understand, or explore industries that operate under different principles than your own. When you expose yourself to a range of perspectives, you develop a sharper ability to analyze, adapt, and synthesize new insights. They key isn’t just exposure–– it’s allowing yourself to genuinely engage, question, and even reconsider your own assumptions. Breaking out of an echo chamber isn’t about abandoning your beliefs; it’s about sharpening them while expanding your capacity for knowledge.

Be constantly learning and absorbing new information.

Develop the habit of continuous learning, not just as a means of acquiring knowledge, but as a way to sharpen your ability to connect the dots between seemingly unrelated ideas. Some of the greatest innovations have come from individuals who took knowledge from one field and applied it in a completely different context. Whether it’s through reading, hands-on experimentation, or immersing yourself in new experiences, every piece of information you absorb becomes a potential tool for future problem-solving. True innovators don’t just wait for inspiration – they cultivate it by staying curious, expanding their skill sets, and always remaining open to new ways of thinking. The more knowledge you collect, the more opportunities you create to transform (and combine) that knowledge into something groundbreaking.
